The Brazilian military Fernando Rodrigues Goulart will be the new Commander of the United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti (Minustah), replacing general major Luiz Ramos. The Secretary-General of the United Nations (UN), Ban Ki-moon, has confirmed the name of Goulart as head of the mission. Ramos was praised for his "dedication, professionalism and leadership, critical to the stabilization efforts in Haiti." In a statement, the UN informed that Goulart is a professional of "distinguished military career, holding many commands and hierarchical senior positions." The new Commander of the Minustah was military observer of the UN Mission in Mozambique, known as Onumoz, in 1993, and more recently in Nepal. From 2008 to 2010, he worked in the Department of Peace-Keeping Operations of the United Nations, as senior liaison officer in Europe and Latin America Division. The Minustah was established in 2004 and, since the beginning, UN troops are led by a Brazilian official. In addition, Brazil has always collaborated by sending troops to join the peacekeepers. So far, there’s still no definition of a timeframe for the withdrawal of foreign military personnel in Haiti. The international community collaborates with the Government of Haitian President, Michel Martelly, for the reconstruction of the country.
