Granola, cereal bars and cookies made from products prepared from the biodiversity of the Brazilian savannas, such as baru almonds and babassu, among others, promise to delight palates at Expo West - Natural Products, the most important fair in the United States for the organic and natural products sector. With support from the Ministry of Agrarian Development, the ’Emporium Cerrado’ community network is one of the cooperatives that will be present at the event. The network includes farmers, extractivists, fishermen, seasonal farmers and tour guides from the States of Goiás, Bahia and Minas Gerais. The latest natural and specialty products will be on show between March 9 and 11 in California, including foods, health, beauty, organics, natural living, supplements and animal products. Ten family agriculture enterprises from different regions in Brazil will participate in a stand mounted by the Institute for the Promotion of Development (IPD) with support from the Ministry of Agrarian Development (MDA). More than 3,000 exhibitors from around the world are expected to attend the event. "It is the first time we have participated at Expo West and it is a great opportunity to expand markets for family farmers, in particular the international market for sustainable products" said the Director of Income Generation and Added Value of the MDA Agriculture Secretariat, Arnoldo de Campos. "The overseas market is important for the consolidation of family farming enterprises, especially those working with sustainable products, organics and socio-biodiversity. Moreover, the U.S. market is the largest organic market in the world and is very interested in Brazilian forest products" he added. The ’Emporium Cerrado’ cooperative is a networked marketing partnership that invests in products that are cultivated based on sustainable principles. The network of 1,600 families has been in existence since 2002. The baru almond is the principal ingredient in the products that Emporium Cerrado will take to the fair. Rich in nutrients that are essential for good health, the baru almond is a legume typical of the Brazilian savanna and is new to the international organic market. The ripe baru almonds are collected from the ground by extractivist farmers, leaving part of the product behind to promote natural reproduction of the species. The nuts can be eaten roasted, and may also be used as an ingredient in the preparation of various recipes. A rich source of protein, oil can be extracted from the plant as well as the nuts, pulp and shell.
